Abstract While much has been written about the impact (or not) of Western intervention in latter stages Taiping Rebellion (1851–1866), comparatively little attention heretofore directed towards riverine campaigns and combined land-river operations whereby Qing steadily reduced scope control tightened cordon around their heavenly capital at Nanjing. Strategists such as Hu Linyi Zuo Zongtang recognized importance warfare sought to build a flotilla capable meeting its military needs. Furthermore, experience gained against Taipings would later be applied Zongtang’s northwest China Central Asia great effect. Using Zuo’s personal accounts, contemporary newspaper reports, other primary sources, this article highlights significance rivers for extension maintenance empire late China.
